Animal Exhibits

Our live animal exhibits feature species native to the coastal Georgia barrier islands. Our catch-and-release program collects local species through our educational programs and ensures a short stay in captivity before release back into the wild.

Explore and interact with hermit crabs, snails, and sea stars from the intertidal zone.

Resident Sea Turtles

The two loggerhead sea turtles on exhibit are stragglers that are rescued from local nests. These Marine Debris Ambassadors are raised at the science center for three years until release at a larger size, increasing their chances of survival in nature.

Right Whale Exhibit

Meet Smoke, the life-size model of our adopted North Atlantic Right Whale and learn about the conservation challenges for the NARW.

Fossil Room

A veritable treasure chest of local artifacts and biofacts like massive megalodon teeth, colossal fin whale ribs and cabinets of curiosities.

Scenic Viewing Area

Relax and enjoy the glorious panorama of where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Savannah River—you might spot cargo ships, surfers, and dolphins!

Ship Watch Loft

Our Ship Watch Loft features stunning views of the Savannah River channel and Atlantic Ocean. TIMSC is proud to host the first Station Keeper live alert systems on the East Coast that use AIS technology to warn ships of whale presence in the area.

Pirate Ship Playground

Adventure Ahoy! Step aboard our interactive pirate ship playground, where a slide and rope ladders spark endless imaginative play.

Strike a pose (or four!) in our outdoor photo booth for a souvenir that fits in any suitcase.

Birding Overlook

Grab a pair of binoculars and learn to identify local sea and shorebird species. A Motus Tower is coming soon that will read tags of migrating bird species, like ed knots and buffleheads!

Benthic Tank

Meet local bottom-dwelling species like sting rays and horseshoe crabs and learn about the unique adaptations that allow these animals to thrive on the ocean floor.
