1987 – The University of Georgia Marine Extension Service (MAREX) started marine education programming on Tybee Island with a summer beach walk and seining program.

1988 – MAREX and the City of Tybee Island partnered and established the Tybee Island Marine Science Center

1990 – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary joined the partnership.

1990 – The Tybee Island Marine Science Foundation was formed.
